be very worried. If you didn't send it to get rustproofed, wash it every few days.

Wash it regularly. Especially the underside and wheel wells

Got it. I am going Tuesday or Wednesday. The waterlines outside my house are not so nice right now.

It will destroy your car overnight if you don't lick it off instantly. Salvia is the only effective way to remove it.

There's various ways, The ways that I know are,

Drilling holes in the doorjambs and run oil through, applying a sort of wax on the inside of the doors, or maybe just greasing everything.

So would applying wax to the body of the be a good idea during the winter?

To be honest i'm not sure, a bodyshop my mother brings her car to for repairs does the wax method, I'm not sure what the "wax" is, but it isn't runny like oil is, but I still think it's oil based though.

It's better if you rub McDonald's French fries all over the car.

and pepper :]

I thought I've seen a product you spay all over under your car. It coats the under side of your car with oily thick gunk that eventually dries and thickens (of course everywhere but the exhaust). All newer Volvo's come with this semi thick grease from the factory. It's as thick as a nickle and you can purchase it somewhere. Bedsides that, wash under your car every single day with a pressure washer, and even that might not work :( I've never even seen snow in my life but have been turning wrenches for about 10 years. I absolutely hated... loathed working on cars from up north.

I have only driven twice in snow, once the secondary car in the family is running I shall use that. How bad would the rust be after one winter?

Kinja'd!!! lonestranger > YSI-what can brown do for you

I used to be a detailer, and part of my job was applying rustproofing and undercoating.

I don't know if places still do the "drill holes" method. I know Ziebart used to. At any rate, drilling is unnecessary and can cause more harm than good. All of those holes can act as great starting points for rust. Besides, even a half-competent installer can get the rust proofing jizz everywhere it needs to be. The stuff we used was a thick, goopy liquid that was applied with a pneumatic gun that has different hoses and wands.

Kinja'd!!!

It goes in through places like the drip holes in the doors and inside the floor from underneath, where there's often many rubber grommets. The goop fogs up inside the whole cavity, sticks to the surfaces, and dries as a soft, thick wax. Kinda like ear wax. It usually is guaranteed, but you have to keep getting it reapplied every year.

Undercoating is not really needed on any unibody cars made in the last few decades that I've seen. They all tend to have some sort of undercoating from the factory. Body-on-frame vehicles tend not to come with it, but that doesn't apply to you anyway.

Yes, waxing/polishing the exterior paint before winter is a great idea. The was will help keep road grime from sticking to the paint, and will help form a barrier between the paint and the contaminants that are attacking it.

Even if you don't rust "proof", and don't wax, the best thing you can do is to thoroughly wash it frequently. Not daily or even weekly, but don't go for weeks or months without giving it a good douche, especially if it looks like a salt lick. Pay more attention to the underbody and wheelwells than anything else. Especially the rear wheelwells, or anywhere that you can see where the sheet metal can and will tend to collect debris, such as under the fender lip if it has one.

My last tip isn't directly rust related, but a winter tip nonetheless. While you're washing the paint, be extra sure to rinse as much debris as you can, keep your mitt clean wet and soapy, keep the paint wet and soapy, etc. Salt and sand from winter driving can murder the paint if you rub it into the paint while washing.

I don't think anyone's going to be hand washing their car during the winter unless they have access to a heated garage.

You can try and find an automatic car wash with an undercarriage wash and use that. Aside from having a protectant applied to the underbody as some others have suggested, that's really all you can do. I know that the auto car washes tend to be pretty busy on the days they're open during the winter though. They usually close if it gets too cold. Your best bet is to try them during lunch time or earlier, or later at night (provided they're still open). Using a garden hose to wash the underside of your car isn't exactly feasible during the winter, and heated garages really aren't very common, especially not heated garages where it's actually feasible to wash your car in one without soaking and ruining everything inside.

Post that question separately, I can't answer that since it doesn't snow where I live thus not having a proper time frame. But from what I've seen, brake calipers, heat shields, various exposed nuts and bolts (including alignment adjustment points), wheels, and the vents between the rotors are the first to go. Make a post asking for rust time frame tomorrow.

No U-Do wash bays in your area, I take it? I realize I'm in the minority doing this, but I take my own bucket, mitt, & soap to the self-serve car wash.

No, I've never even heard of them. During the winter I probably wouldn't go so nuts as to soap wash the car but I might spray it down (and underneath) once in a while, if I had the option.

Where do you live in the US?

If you live deep in the salt belt (michigan, buffalo NY area, ohio), prepare for your car to be rotted out in 5-10 years max

if you live in like... maryland, just wash it every so often and you'll be fine.

I live in Indiana. Up north by Chicago they salt it every time it is about to snow. Where I go to school, they put out salt after is starts snowing... If that makes any sense.

Where I am, in winter, outdoor hoses aren't an option at all. The only way to wash a car is to go to a commercial car wash of some sort.

okay yeah your in the "cars rust faster" part of the US. I'm in NJ and even though we have salt, things last a lot longer than 10 years here.

Keep the underside of your car washed, that will help a lot. Also, parking a salty car in a warm garage will actually make the corrosion process happen a lot faster, so keep that in mind.

Your Toyaburu?

Step one: buy car cover

Step two: store car in barn for winter

Step three: acquire $400 winter beater

Worked wonders with my miata :)

That is a bit of a relief I guess. Hopefully I won't have to drive the car too often during the winter, I should be able to use the families "secondary" car to travel to work.

I should do the winter beater thing. Although, I shouldn't have to drive the car too much. I will store the car at home for January and February cause at school the public transport rocks!

new cars tend to be rust proofed a bit better overall, plus theirs a lot more plastic....

my marauder has seen winter action (no longer) and even though the exhaust is a little brown, the underside is very clean.

With your BR-Z I'd worry more about slick conditions than salt IMO

Kinja'd!!! YSI-what can brown do for you > offroadkarter

Don't worry, it is a hoot in the slick. You have drive with the TC otherwise it doesn't let the car give the power it needs. Holding drifts in snowy conditions are super easy though, and a ton of fun!

That's what I did. Most of the time though if you have played any sort of video game the street drifts are pretty tame and mild. You never purposely drift while in traffic, that is just stupid.
